A little bit of crazy in all us girls

Last night Kristy and I went to Hollywood video to see if there were any good movies out to rent that we hadn’t seen yet. When we arrived I checked the “now playing” board and found that “Have you heard about the Morgan’s” was playing. I remembered one of my cousins telling me that the movie wasn’t horrible so we thought that sounded like a cute movie. We were both in the mood for something lighthearted and funny. “Nothing serious that could make us cry” says Kristy. I agree rather quickly because the last several weeks of my life have been a little off kilter you could say and I was in the mood for a good chuckle, maybe even a laugh. As we meander down the isles my eyes spot a movie I had pretty much forgotten about. “All About Steve”. Kristy, Jennie and I were going to see that one night and someone had informed us it was a terribly stupid movie and we shouldn’t waste our time or money. So what do I do, I turn to Kristy and say “Let’s rent this one, I mean really, we just watched the edited version of The Hangover and it was incredibly dumb... This one has to be better” she follows with “ok, and it does have Bradley Cooper so that’s a plus”
So, we rent our movie, come home and get everything set up ready to begin the flick. We had a rough go because about 10 min in the screen freezes and I can’t figure out how to work our Wal Mart special $3.50 universal remote to get it to jump scenes. I finally got it to start over and then fast forward to where we left off and it freezes again. So Kristy gets up and pulls the dvd out and cleans the smudge off the back. I tell her to blow into the dvd player (just a product of being a child of the 80’s/90’s with Nintendos). So we get things going again. Right off the bat, I know I’m going to enjoy this film, despite the terrible hair that Sandra Bullock has in this movie, I find my self really laughing at this movie. Basically she’s an eccentric girl named Mary who makes cross word puzzles for a living, her parents set her up on a blind date with the oh so hot Steve (Bradley cooper). She instantly falls into lust with him and starts stalking him. He’s a camera man for a news channel and travels a lot from story to story. She gets the wrong idea when he gets creeped out by her and tells her “I’ve got to go to Boston for work but, I wish you could be there with me. She goes to work the next day and has made a cross word puzzle entitled “All About Steve” and gets fired from her job. A funny scene is where she’s taking a bubble bath has this “ah ha” moment and runs to tell her parents how she and Steve were destined to be together based on what he said to her and the events of them meeting... At this point I turn to Kristy and just laugh... Girls are crazy! Of course she thought about all the things that were “said” and not said. She over thought everything and came to this conclusion that she needed to follow him around the country on news reports because he had said he wanted her there. I won’t spoil the whole movie but, basically she follows him around from one crazy news story to the next mets some quirky friends and learns a lot about herself and life a long the way. Typical light hearted cheesy comedy. The very last thing she says is “Girls, if you have to stalk a man to get his attention, he probably wasn’t yours to begin with” Ha ha ha I think we all know a few girls in our life with whom we could give that advice too.

It really got me thinking. I know it was a movie and her character was so exaggerated but, I truly feel like every girl can relate to that “crazy” in some way, shape or form. There is a little bit of “Mary” in all of us. Who among us haven’t over analyzed why a guy said something in a “certain tone of voice” or the way his eyes looked when he said hi? We. All. have.

I consider myself a pretty level headed down to earth girl but, oh boy. I can feel that crazy coming on from time to time and it takes all the strength I have to fight it. I can remember this guy I liked when I was about 19. I thought he was so handsome, funny, smart and most of all I thought he was really into me. He lived in my apartment complex and I used to go out of my way to go by his house. This was before the days when everyone had cell phones, so I would just stop by his house randomly and if he wasn’t there I would leave notes for him on his door or with his roommates. I knew where he worked and I would go in there every chance I got to see if perhaps he might be there. Now, don’t get me wrong, I did actually go on a few dates with him and one night he even kissed me. So I did have some signs indicating that he liked me. Looking back I know exactly what went wrong. I scared the poor boy to death! I came on way too strong. I was what some might call “too available”. If ever he would stop by my house I would drop all my plans just to hang out with him. I never created any sort of “chase” I might as well had been sitting outside his door like a little puppy waiting for him to want to spend time with me. I learned a very important and hard lesson with that guy. Obviously it ended badly but, I wouldn’t necessarily take it back. I needed to learn that. It didn’t cure all my crazy-girlness but it helped. There are several more instances (not nearly as bad or sad I guess) along the journey of my life but, each one has taught me so much.

Anyways, I really enjoyed this movie. It had a really cute ending. (Spoiler Alert) No, she doesn’t get the guy but, She learned a lot about about who she was and she wasn’t afraid to take risks. If you now go and watch this movie you’re going to think I’m insane. All I said was I can relate in a small way. I more so relate to how she wasn’t ever afraid to be herself, weird or not.
