"Turn off the lights, I can't digest my food"

When I was a kid, I remember summer visits with my cousins where we would drive our parents crazy by staying up all night talking and laughing. I remember one night we were being particularly naughty and my aunt Carol came in to quite us. She turned on the lights and Laura said something to the effect of "Turn off the lights mom, I can't digest my food" we laughed at that for years. Lets be real, I'm still laughing about it.
Little did I know at that moment that years later, I would have problems digesting food. For those of you who know, I've had stomach problems for about 10 years now. I first noticed them when I moved away from home. I went to the doctor to be tested and they could never give me a straight answer. "It could be IBS, you could be lactose intolerant or even have Fibromyalgia" Well, I gave up dairy for a while and introduced it back into my diet and I was fine. I did start drinking soy milk and to this day, I'm not much of a milk drinker. I actually prefer Almond milk these days. My symptoms have come and gone over the years and I've managed to basically ignore it despite the stomach aches and pains I continue to have. I have learned that black beans and red onions upset my stomach so I try to stay away from those.
For the last month, I have had a lot of the intense pain come back and feel like I can't get my stomach under control. I've been talking to different people about food allergies and how to test for them. I've had a sneaking suspicion that it could be a wheat allergy. I feel like more and more I know people who have been diagnosed with Celiac's disease which is an allergy to wheat. When they would tell me their symptoms I could relate to them a lot. So, after talking to some people, I've decided to go on a gluten-free diet for a few weeks to see if my symptoms clear up. I want to feel better but, I pray this isn't it because I would have to dramatically change my eating habits if this is the case. I guess if I am allergic to wheat, it'll be nice to finally have my stomach issues under control. I'll just need a lot of love and support. Eating out will be tough but, I guess I'll try to look at this in a really positive light. I'll be eating much healthier. I went to the grocery store to get some gluten free food and I found redvines, my favorite candy! I checked the back and it said "Contains Wheat" I was depressed.

Well, (mom) I know I haven't told you about this but, hopefully it won't be that big of a deal... ok, sorry, I guess it kind of is a big deal but, I just want to get things under control and stop having tummy issues! I'll keep you updated on my findings. So far, I haven't had wheat in my system for 24 hours and I seem to be feeling better. I'm giving it 2 weeks though, just to make sure. I'm going to really miss candy but, if this is what's happening, I'll have to adjust and deal with it. Better that than always having bloating and stomach pain.

That would stink if it was your allergy, but it would also be nice to find out! Fortunately, because there are a fair amount of people with Celiac's, the market for foods that are wheat free is much bigger now than it was 5 or 10 years ago. Good luck with your experiments!

Thanks for letting me find out from Talia (she read your blog first). It is more common than you think, and thankfully food manufacturers are figuring that out. I recently read an article in the Mormon Times about a little girl with Celiac disease, and they gave the website of www.celiac.org for more information. Couldn't hurt to check it out! See you soon...
